US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project would threaten the strategic position and interests of Ukraine and Poland, if completed.

Speaking at a congressional session with members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee yesterday (March 14), the US Secretary of State affirmed that the US will continue to oppose the construction and completion of the "Nord Stream 2" project. He said that this project has violated the European Union's energy security principles and at the same time threatened the economic and strategic positions of Ukraine and Poland.

Last weekend, US State Department spokesman Ned Price also announced that the US government would impose additional sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project if new companies were found to be involved in the pipeline's construction.

The Nord Stream 2 project was originally scheduled to be put into operation in early 2020, doubling Russia's gas transport capacity compared to Nord Stream 1 and ensuring supplies to Western European countries via the Baltic Sea. However, the project's construction was stalled as the US increased pressure on the parties involved and imposed sanctions./.
