Professor, Academician, Doctor of Medicine Ho Hoang Mat is currently working, researching, and teaching at the University of Alabama, one of the prestigious public universities in the United States. In 1991, he defended his doctoral dissertation in chemistry, and in 1998, he defended his second doctoral dissertation in medicine. He also had a scientific research project that won a US science innovation award. On his first visit to his homeland, he donated a portion of his prize money to help his hometown. His wife and two children are all doctors in medicine; his second son, Ho Hoang Truong Son, born in 1985, defended his doctoral dissertation in medicine at the age of 26 and was recruited to work at a prestigious university in the United States.

Although born and raised in the United States, young PhD holder Ho Hoang Truong Son speaks Vietnamese very well. It is known that Professor Ho Hoang Mat was born in Quang Nam but has ancestral roots in Nghe An, so every time he returns to Vietnam, he and his family visit his hometown in Nghe An.
