A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Colombia.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that at 4:31 p.m. GMT on September 30, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Andes mountains in southwestern Colombia.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at a depth of 160 km, 20 km east of the town of La Vega and 326 km northeast of Ecuador's capital, Quito.

There is currently no information on casualties or damage from this earthquake.

The earthquake occurred in Popayan state, and people in 10 of Colombia's 30 states could feel it.

This was the strongest earthquake since the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the same area in 2004.

In 1983, Popayan experienced another powerful earthquake that killed at least 250 people.
