Earthquake in India leaves over 70 people dead or injured.

On the afternoon of May 1st, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, killing two people, injuring 69, and causing dozens of buildings to collapse in the area.

The Kishtwar and Doda districts in Jammu and Kashmir state were the two hardest-hit by the earthquake, with nearly 400 houses, schools, and hospitals destroyed or damaged, and people fleeing in panic into the streets.

Among the 69 people injured in these two districts were 32 students. The earthquake also caused tremors in many other areas of northern India, including the capital New Delhi.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the coast of Honshu in eastern Japan early on May 2nd. The earthquake's epicenter was initially determined to be 17.9 km deep.
