Maritime trade activities in particular, the seaport system plays an important role, deciding the global reach of every country with a sea. In Vietnam, there is 3,260km of coastline, this is a great advantage for developing the seaport system.

The policy of our Party and State is to focus on investing in renovating, upgrading, and building many new national and international seaports nationwide, creating positive changes in the development of the marine economy. Currently, the country has 49 large and small ports in operation.

According to Decision 1037/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister issued on June 24, 2014 approving the adjustment of the Planning for the development of Vietnam's seaport system to 2020, with a vision to 2030, Vietnam focuses on developing ports capable of receiving large-capacity ships of up to 100,000 tons or larger in all three regions of the North, Central and South.

In Vietnam, seaports are divided into 3 types:

Type I is a regional hub port. Type I seaports that act as gateway ports or international transit ports are denoted as Type IA seaports. IA ports are ports capable of receiving ships with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons; Type I ports are capable of receiving ships with a capacity of up to 70,000 tons.

Type II seaport is a local general seaport.

Type III seaports are specialized seaports serving concentrated industrial facilities and business activities.

The development and improvement of seaport capacity is linked to the system of airports, railways, roads, inland waterways and other works, creating synchronous development of localities. This will be an important driving force for other industries and services in localities to develop, create more jobs and contribute to the budget.

Comparing the advantages between types of transportation, sea transportation has outstanding advantages that other modes of transportation do not have such as suitable costs, large volume transportation, long transportation routes, and environmental friendliness.

At the same time, promote the development of logistics services towards the comprehensive development of multimodal transport. That is the movement of the whole system such as warehousing, storage of goods, packaging, packaging, circulation of goods... That process helps businesses save a lot of costs, reduce product prices, and increase competitiveness.

In Nghe An, along with the effectively exploited Cua Lo - Ben Thuy Port, there are also ports invested in and built by The Vissai, Tuan Loc, Thien Minh Minh Duc Cement Groups..., creating a port cluster capable of accommodating ships of over 100,000 tons to load and unload goods.

Nghe An's seaport system is expected to connect with Nghi Son port (Thanh Hoa) and Vung Ang port (Ha Tinh) to promote strong socio-economic development. In particular, the coastal route from Nghi Son to Cua Lo phase I has been planned and is expected to create many development breakthroughs.

At the same time, it is associated with the planning of Nam Cam station and the railway connecting Nam Cam - Cua Lo; linking to maximize the efficiency of the Hanoi expressway through Thanh Thuy (Thanh Chuong - Nghe An) to Vientiane (Laos)...

The development of seaports in Nghe An will be connected with countries in the region and the world, especially the northeastern region of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia...
