Dong Thap: Successfully crossbred new rice varieties

Dong Thap Agricultural Seed Center has just successfully crossbred a set of promising new rice varieties for the 2013 Summer-Autumn crop, notably the DTS 9 variety, which can replace the poor quality rice varieties that are currently being widely grown.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tai - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap said that the DTS 9 variety has the advantage of high yield, good rice quality, meeting export requirements, and can replace low-quality rice varieties as present.

Although the growth time is similar to other commonly used varieties, the tree trunk is large and strong, has the ability to resist falling... is a promising variety that needs to be further researched, evaluated and applied in practice to create a brand of varieties with the characteristics of Dong Thap.

DTS 9 is one of 19 new promising rice varieties named DTS (Dong Thap Seeds) selected after 4 years of Dong Thap Agricultural Seed Center implementing the project "Breeding and selecting new rice varieties with high yield, good quality, and adaptable to Dong Thap cultivation conditions."

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture of districts, towns and farmers in the province, the DTS 9 variety is superior to other varieties in the 19 varieties that the center has bred, suitable for the Dong Thap region, with large, strong stems, long and wide flag leaves (37cm long x 2cm wide), bright, firm seeds, tight flowers, low susceptibility to disease, high yield (7.37 tons/ha). However, because the Summer-Autumn crop coincides with the annual flood season, the center needs to continue researching and selecting to further shorten the growing period, in order to create short-term varieties to meet the annual flood evacuation needs./.
