New breakthrough in cancer treatment

(Baonghean.vn) - The research results of 36 scientists from the UK Cancer Research Institute published in Science magazine on March 3 showed that although cancer cells mutate violently in the human body, they can be isolated and destroyed by certain immune cells during the period when they have not yet developed too complexly.

Researchers have discovered that cancer can be treated with new immune cells right from the start.

Dr. Sergio Quezada - representative of the research team shared on CNN channel, immune cells can destroy cancer cells right from when the patient's tumors have not yet developed, instead of eliminating them when they have reached the metastatic stage like current treatment methods.

For many years, one of the biggest obstacles in the fight against cancer has been that tumors evolve too complexly and metastasize to all parts of the human body.

Dr Quezada compares “The body's immune system to the police trying to tackle cancer – the various “criminals” are like a gang of bandits involved in various crimes, from robbery to smuggling, and it is difficult for the police to know when the crimes are happening.”

Dr. Quezada said the research could lead to two approaches to cancer treatment: either using customized vaccines to kill each patient's core cancer cells, or identifying immune cells, possibly T cells, that can fight the core cancer cells, then cloning those T cells in the lab.

However, the Doctor also said that he will not conduct human trials of either approach, and hopes to begin testing on animals within the next 5 years.

However, this new cancer treatment method also has some limitations such as the rapid growth rate of cancer cells, making it impossible to develop a customized vaccine for each patient, the treatment cost is too expensive and not all types of cancer can be treated with this method./.
