(Baonghean.vn) - That is the project of a system to distill salt water into fresh water with vacuum technology using hydraulic pumps by ocean wave energy by two students, Phung Van Long and Mai Nhat Anh, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted.

The information was just announced by teacher Mai Van Quyen - the direct instructor for students at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted after the results of the presentation round for the international competition of the national Science and Technology competition in both the Northern and Southern regions.

This is also the first time a project by a Nghe An student has been selected to participate in this competition.

Distilling salt water for use on boats and on islands is the idea of Phung Van Long and Mai Nhat Anh (Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted), stemming from the reality of the lack of fresh water on some islands and archipelagos and the fact that many fishermen who go to sea to exploit seafood for long periods of time have to bring fresh water from the mainland and have to return when their water reserves run out.

From this reality, Phung Van Long and Mai Nhat Anh came up with the idea of creating a system to filter seawater into fresh water that is more compact and economical.

The project is built based on the method of liquid evaporation and condensation, using ocean waves to operate the pressure reduction pump system, thereby reducing the boiling temperature of seawater, helping to create a larger amount of steam, increasing the productivity of the machine.

Previously, the project on the system of distilling seawater into fresh water had been researched by many groups of authors in Nghe An and participated in the national science and technology competition. However, the projects still had many limitations, the amount of distilled water was small, or the system did not operate well when operating independently at sea.

The project of the two students has overcome the above limitations. This is also the project that won First Prize at the Provincial Science and Technology Competition and the National Science and Technology Competition.

The International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) was developed from the National Science Fair of the United States, founded by the Society for Science & the Public (SSP), and first held in Philadelphia, USA in 1950.

In 1958, the competition first became an International Science and Engineering Fair with the participation of Japan, Canada and Germany. Since 1997, Intel Corporation has been the main sponsor of the competition and since then the competition has been called Intel ISEF. In addition to Intel Corporation, there are many other sponsoring units and organizations that support and sponsor awards for Intel ISEF.

Intel ISEF is the largest annual international science and engineering competition for high school students (grades 8 through 12). Each year, more than 1,500 high school students from over 70 countries and regions around the world participate to present results in 22 areas of scientific research.

In 2018, Vietnam had 8 projects selected to participate in this competition. For the first time, Nghe An had a project selected to participate.
