Artificial brain project receives 2 billion euros in funding.

French scientists announced on January 27 that their research on graphene materials and the neurochemistry of the human brain will receive €2 billion ($2.68 billion) in funding from the European Commission.

These two sectors have benefited from the European Union's Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme.

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) says that the funding, up to $1 billion per initiative, will be spent over 10 years.

Graphene, discovered less than a decade ago, is a network of carbon atoms linked together in a hexagonal pattern, forming a long, sheet-like lattice. It is believed to possess enormous potential due to its superconductivity, exceptional mechanical strength, and optical transparency that surpasses all other materials.

Meanwhile, the Human Brain Project seeks to find ways to simulate the activity of brain cells, chemicals, and connections within a supercomputer. The program's goal is to better understand brain function and development.

The project hopes to find new treatments for diseases like Alzheimer's and enhance artificial intelligence.
