Wales is considering building a dragon-shaped island with 10,000 floating homes to generate clean energy for the city of Swansea.

Dragon Energy Island, shaped like the dragon on the Welsh flag, is part of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon Project (TLP). The $1.64 billion project proposed by Malcolm Copson, founder and CEO of MOI Imagineering, was scrapped by the British government last year due to its high cost. However, the new proposal is cheaper because the island uses underwater turbines to generate electricity.

The giant turbines will generate clean energy for Swansea for more than a century without any funding from the UK government, Copson said, with other councils and public bodies able to buy power directly from the energy island.

Copson also shared the island’s design, which will include retail, an underwater data center, a solar farm, and facilities for producing pure hydrogen and oxygen. The island will include 10,000 floating homes. The floating homes will sit on giant stilts, protected by seawalls, and feature advanced solutions for waste and wastewater treatment.

An interdisciplinary committee appointed by the city government is assessing the feasibility of the project. Copson hopes to start construction on the island in 2021 and have it operational by 2026.
