World public opinion condemns the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Türkiye.

The assassination of the Russian ambassador to Türkiye right in the capital city of Ankara has shocked the world.

Today (December 20th), the press in many countries has published a lot of information surrounding the incident, along with comments and opinions from many international diplomatic figures.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated last night that this was an act of terrorism.

In a letter to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the head of the European Union's Foreign Office, Federika Mogherini, emphasized: "I am deeply saddened to learn of this incident. I offer my deepest condolences to the Ambassador's family and colleagues. The European Union strongly condemns this attack and expresses its solidarity with Russia."

The United Nations also strongly condemned the actions, stating that "attacks on diplomats or ambassadors are unjustifiable" and urged countries to identify and appropriately punish such acts. The UN Security Council also considered this to be an act of terrorism perpetrated by organizations or individuals providing support to the perpetrators.

In its statement, the United Nations Security Council also affirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes a grave threat to world peace and security. The Security Council reiterated the “fundamental principle” of the inviolability of diplomats as enshrined in the Vienna Convention.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon immediately condemned the incident, calling it "senseless terrorism" and absurd in his statement. He also said he would continue to monitor the situation.

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Valistriom wrote on her personal page that she was "utterly shocked" by the assassination of the Russian ambassador in Ankara.

Former Swedish Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Karl Bilt compared this act to the assassination of Crown Prince Frans Ferdinand in Saraevo, which led to World War I.

He expressed concern that attacking a diplomat could further escalate tensions in the region.
