The accident occurred at around 7am (local time) on February 9, about 60km from Munich. A train derailed after the incident and several carriages were overturned.
“The current casualty count is four dead, 15 critically injured, 40 seriously injured and 100 slightly injured,” said Martin Winkler, a spokesman for Roseheim police.
The seriously injured were airlifted to the nearest hospital by helicopter, while others were transported by ambulance.
“At the scene of the crash, there is debris everywhere. Rescuers are climbing on the carriages and trying to pull the victims out,” a rescue worker was quoted as saying by Bavarian TV channel Bayerischer Rundfunk.

The cause of the accident is still unknown. The two trains are owned by the Meridian transport company, part of the German Transdev group.
“This is the biggest accident in many years in this area and we have emergency doctors, ambulances and helicopters at the scene,” another police representative added.
It is understood that many people have not yet been pulled out of the wreckage, so the death toll may continue to rise. Due to some festive activities taking place in Bavaria, the number of passengers on the two trains above was lower than usual during the early morning rush hour.
