German federal prosecutors said the man was suspected of having worked "for a foreign intelligence organization" since early 2012.

BBC reported on May 1 that prosecutors' reports showed that the man may have been spying on German tax investigators.

German tax authorities have controversially purchased CDs containing information from whistleblowers in Swiss banks in an effort to track down German citizens with accounts in Swiss banks.

The issue has caused friction between the Swiss and German governments. Authorities in the German federal states have justified the huge payments they made to buy CDs, claiming that the information contained in the CDs allows them to collect even larger sums of money from tax evaders.

However, Switzerland believes that paying people who stole information from Swiss banks is wrong.

Prosecutors said they arrested Mr. Daniel M. (54 years old) on April 28, but the arrest warrant for him was issued in December 2016.

The German Federal Criminal Police Office also searched several businesses and residential areas in Frankfurt near the Wetterau region following the arrest.
