Hotline between China and Taiwan officially goes into operation

According to Xinhua News Agency, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China Ma Xiaoguang said the hotline between mainland China and Taiwan officially went into operation on December 30.

Leaders in charge of cross-strait affairs from both sides have contacted each other for the first time via this hotline.

The above information was given by Mr. Ma Xiaoguang at a press conference in Beijing.

Previously, on December 25, the chairwoman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and a leading candidate for president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, pledged that if elected, she would pursue peaceful relations with mainland China while maintaining democracy on the island.
