On Wednesday, October 8th, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy pledged before Parliament to provide clear information about the Ebola virus infection case in Spain, while urging the public to remain calm. To ensure transparency regarding the infection, the Prime Minister called on everyone to "provide all possible information" as directed by the government. Mariano Rajoy also emphasized that "We need to be vigilant, but at the same time, we need to remain calm."
The head of government outlined objectives for dealing with the Ebola outbreak, such as “treating those infected,” “isolating and monitoring” those who had been in contact with victims, “investigating to determine how and why the infection occurred,” and “finally, informing the entire population about the current situation.”
On Monday, October 7th, a nurse tested positive for the Ebola virus at a hospital in La Paz, Madrid, becoming the first person outside of Africa to contract the virus. Two months prior, she had cared for two Spaniards who had returned from an affected area and were infected with Ebola. Both died. Following this, three other people, including the nurse's husband, were hospitalized and quarantined due to contact with the victims. However, authorities stated that only the husband was at "high risk of infection" among the three hospitalized individuals.
Immediately, the European Union planned to establish specific procedures and coordinate with all levels to prevent the entry of the Ebola virus into European territory. At the same time, the Union also demanded an explanation from Spain regarding the cases of infection in the country.
