Cao Van Sy is the brother-in-law of Mr. Hoang Van Thin (born 1976). Because of their close relationship, the two occasionally had a few drinks. At around 11:00 a.m. on October 6, 2019, while drinking together, Mr. Thin and Sy had a conflict because Sy said that his brother-in-law often drank alcohol and beat his wife and children.
Sy said Thin was a patriarch and would not come to his house anymore. Thin held a knife in one hand and a pipe in the other and challenged Sy, but he argued back.
Thin raised his pipe and knife to hit Sy, but Sy grabbed them. Sy pushed Thin to the ground and punched Thin three times in the head and face. The victim was taken to the emergency room and died at 11 p.m. the same day.
At the trial, the defendant admitted all his crimes and said that because he had drunk too much alcohol, he could not control his actions. In his final words, the defendant apologized to his mother and also apologized to his wife, who is also his sister.
The panel of judges determined that in this case, the defendant had mitigating circumstances: he was a first-time offender, confessed honestly, his family had contributed to the revolution, and the victim's wife had asked for a reduced sentence for the defendant. Considering the case as a whole, the court sentenced Cao Van Sy to 10 years in prison.
