EU extends sanctions against Russia for another 6 months

The European Council announced on December 21 that it had decided to extend economic sanctions against Russia for another six months.

The European Council statement said: "On 21 December 2018, the Council extended economic sanctions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy until 31 July 2019."

The decision was made after French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel updated on the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which are related to sanctions, on December 13-14.

According to the statement, given the lack of progress, the European Council has taken a political decision to extend economic sanctions against Russia. The European Council unanimously adopted this decision on December 21./.
