The EU is concerned that the US will take Greenland as part of a deal with Ukraine.

According to RIA Novosti on January 11, Politico reported that some EU officials are concerned that US President Donald Trump might include Greenland as part of a deal on Ukraine.

"Some European officials are concerned that President Trump's team may try to buy Greenland as part of a larger deal on Ukraine," Politico reported.

According to one of the senior White House officials, President Trump is unlikely to reach such a deal in the near future, but things could change.

"It's like a business deal," the official explained in an interview with Politico.

Earlier, the British newspaper Daily Mail, citing sources, wrote that President Donald Trump had ordered the development of a plan to acquire Greenland. Meanwhile, the Telegraph reported that the European Union was preparing sanctions against American companies should Washington not abandon its claims to Greenland. Additionally, the United Kingdom was negotiating with other European countries about deploying a NATO mission to the Danish island.

Earlier, in December 2025, President Trump announced the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland. The governor subsequently confirmed the U.S. intention to incorporate the island into its territory. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Locke Rasmussen later expressed outrage at the new U.S. Special Envoy's statements, including his intention to summon the U.S. Ambassador in Copenhagen and demand an explanation.

The Prime Ministers of Denmark and Greenland, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, warned the US against occupying the island in a joint statement, noting that they expect respect for their shared territorial integrity.
