AFP reported that Germany has warned that its plan to redistribute 160,000 migrants to member states is just "a drop in the ocean".

Meanwhile, Eastern European members such as Romania and Slovakia continue to oppose the mandatory quotas imposed by Brussels.

EU lawmakers have called for contributions from the US, Australia, the United Nations, and Arab nations. However, so far, wealthy Arab countries have remained steadfast in their refusal to accept refugees.

Hungarian police said that in just 24 hours, 3,321 migrants rushed across the border, fearing the new anti-immigrant law coming into effect and the new anti-immigrant fences being built in the country.

Along the Serbian border, around 5,000 migrants arrived at border posts. Further south, at the Macedonian border with Greece, AFP reporters observed about 50 buses carrying more than 2,500 migrants and three trains carrying around 3,000 people leaving the town of Gevgelija.

Earlier, the UN migration agency warned that Hungary would face an influx of at least 42,000 migrants in the following week.

Hungarian police are also struggling to control and register newcomers as they break through barriers and try to climb onto trains and buses heading towards Austria.

The Austrian train operator also called on bus companies and volunteer groups to stop transporting migrants to stations due to overcrowding.
