(Baonghean.vn) - Russia wants to see America divided before the presidential election - this is the opinion of Mr. David Porter, leader of the Foreign Influence Task Force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in yesterday's meeting, February 24, of Congress on election security.

At the meeting, Mr. David Porter accused Russia of spreading false information, exploiting divisions in American society, sowing doubts among the public about the transparency of the election as well as the capacity of leaders. Mr. David Porter made this comment in the context of controversial debates in American politics after intelligence agencies warned that Russia was trying to interfere to help Mr. Donald Trump win the election later this year.

Mr. David Porter did not comment on the US intelligence report, but affirmed that Russia often participates in "cyber information wars" with the aim of disrupting information, making it difficult for those who want to find accurate information about the election situation, eroding American voters' trust in democracy, thereby causing deeper social divisions.

The Foreign Influence Task Force was established by the FBI after information about Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election. The initial purpose of this force was to focus on Russia, but later expanded its activities to counter influence from a number of other countries such as China, North Korea, and Iran.

However, the Countering Foreign Influence Task Force believes that Russia and China have different approaches to influencing the US. While Russia wants to sow division in American society, China focuses on competing for the position of the world's number one economy based on the gradual economic decline over generations in the US.

Three Democratic senators, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Bob Menendez, and Senate Banking Committee member Sherrod Brown, have written a letter asking the Trump administration to sanction Russian President Vladimir Putin and any Russian government entities involved in interfering in the 2020 US presidential election.
