The 6-4 7-6(4) victory over Jack Sock in the opening match of the ATP Finals marked the 50th win of the "Express Train" in his 15th appearance at the tournament for the 8 best players of the year.

By clinching the final ticket to London by winning the Paris Masters last week, Sock became the first American to qualify for the ATP Finals since Mardy Fish in 2011.

But in the opening match, he had to face a very strong opponent, Roger Federer, who had won all three previous matches they had met, the most recent of which was in the Indian Wells semi-finals earlier this year.

FedEx had a sweet start with an early break in the first game of the match, after two consecutive winners.

After some initial wobbles, Sock regained some confidence and his forehands made things more difficult for his opponent as he was constantly forced to the left. However, Federer still maintained his good serve, ending the first set after only 30 minutes with a 6-4 victory.

Entering the second set, the match was a tight affair as both players played very steadily. While the world No. 9 American player tried hard to save many break opportunities, Federer has not yet fallen into a similar situation.

The set had to be decided by a dramatic tie-break. Jack Sock made a double fault in the pivotal game and had to stand still as the “Express Train” scored two more points to mark his 50th career win at the ATP Finals.

It couldn't have been a better start for 36-year-old Swiss tennis player Roger Federer in his first match in the Boris Becker group.
