The former Man Utd captain believes his old club hired the Portuguese coach at the right time, as he looks to prove his worth after being sacked by Chelsea for the second time.

The Old Trafford club has yet to win another Premier League title since legendary coach Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013.

But Rio Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and one Champions League in 12 years with the Red Devils, believes his former club have a good chance of returning to the top next season, after appointing Jose Mourinho to replace Van Gaal.

“When you have a coach with Mourinho's ability, you always have a great chance to win the national championship,” the former England midfielder assessed.

“You’ve never heard a Man Utd player say they want to finish in one of the Champions League places before. When I was there, our target was always to win the Premier League,” Ferdinand continued.

“Man Utd have finally got Mourinho at the best possible moment. Winners, champions are dangerous when they are hurt. He will be focused on getting Man Utd back to glory. Of course he will have a lot of work to do at Old Trafford, because the team only finished fifth last season and did not even qualify for the Champions League,” Ferdinand stressed.

Before signing a three-year contract with Man Utd, Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea in December 2015, just a few months after he led the club to the Premier League title.
