New generation Ford Ranger will be launched in 2019

July 25, 2017 15:04

The 2019 Ford Ranger could be powered by the same 3.3-liter V6 engine, rated at 280 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque as the 2018 F-150.

Ford has confirmed that the next-generation Ranger will be launched in 2019. It will be based on the previous generation platform. Despite the Ranger's popularity around the world, the brand was discontinued in the United States in 2011, with rumors suggesting that an F-100 model will replace it. However, it is likely that the Ranger nameplate will return to the US in the near future.

Although Ford offered a diesel engine in the 2018 F-150 and Chevrolet also offers a diesel, the 2019 Ford Ranger will likely get an EcoBoost engine. A more powerful version of Ford’s 2.5-liter I-4, which could be the base engine in the Fusion, makes 175 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque.

It's also possible that a version of the new 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 will make its way to the 2019 Ford Ranger. The 2018 Ford F-150 can be had with this engine, which produces 280 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.

Meanwhile, the rival Chevrolet Colorado 2017 uses a 3.6-liter V6 engine, producing up to 308 horsepower and 372.8 Nm of maximum torque. Another hypothesis is that the 2019 Ford Ranger will be equipped with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost Turbo Boost engine (producing 310 horsepower and 433.8 Nm of torque on 93-octane fuel in the Ford Mustang), a 2.7-liter EcoBoost turbo-6 engine or a diesel engine.

No other 2019 Ford Ranger competitors currently offer a sporty pickup. The Ranger in the U.S. will be led by a two-door SuperCab in the $20,000 range, along with a more expensive four-door SuperCrew.

The competition in the pickup truck segment of the big three (including General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler) is highly anticipated and Ford also wants to gain an advantage with its 2019 Ranger model.

The 2017 Colorado V6 can tow up to 7,000 pounds, while the diesel models can tow up to 7,000 pounds. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma with a V-6 can tow up to 7,000 pounds. So the Ford Ranger won't let its competitors get ahead of it, and the new pickup will also tow more than 7,000 pounds.

The interior of the 2019 Ford Ranger is more refined, likely equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It has a standard rearview camera, the top version will be equipped with heated/cooled seats, trailer sway control, and LED lighting system. Ford has successfully decorated the interior of models such as the F-150 and Fusion, the Ranger pickup truck will achieve similar success.

Performance is more important than safety in pickup trucks, but Ford is going to make sure both are as good as possible. The European-spec Ranger already comes with a full suite of active safety technology, including emergency braking assist and lane-keeping assist systems. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma and 2017 Chevrolet Colorado are both rated four out of a possible five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford's F-150 Raptor has become one of the most impressive pickup trucks in the world, a serious competitor to the Colorado ZR2 and Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Customers are eagerly waiting for an upgraded Ranger with bigger tires and off-road equipment to match the Colorado ZR2. The 2019 Ford Ranger pickup is expected to launch in the US, Ford also said that it will launch the Bronco SUV a year later.
