Vietnam Futsal receives good news for 2020 World Cup dream
Although not as successful as the previous tournament, Vietnamese Futsal still did what needed to be done at the 2018 Asian Futsal Championship.
Thus, Vietnam futsal has officially ended its journey at the 2018 Asian Finals. Losing to strong opponent Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals, our team could not repeat the achievement of 2 years ago.
However, Vietnam still achieved the necessary results. Specifically, we were determined to win 7th place in Asia in this tournament, above Bahrain and other teams. Thus, Vietnam is sure to be in the second seed group in the 2020 tournament, if it passes the qualifying round.
This is not the best result but it is still worth celebrating. Remember, although we reached the semi-finals of the 2016 tournament, we were still only a member of the second seed group of this tournament, after the host Taiwan 'took' the top spot.
Thus, for 3 consecutive years, Vietnam has fallen into Group 2 at the Asian Futsal Championship. More specifically, next year, Vietnam will avoid Thailand, a very strong opponent and a nemesis of Vietnam, when this team also falls into Group 2 of the continent.
The top 4 teams are Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Iraq. Of these, Iraq will most likely be the 4th ranked team, and will be pushed down to the second seed by the host of the tournament (not yet announced). Being in the second seed group will help Vietnam easily calculate the group stage matches, thereby being able to 'fight' in the quarter-finals, winning a ticket to the 2020 World Cup.
There will be five Asian teams in the 2020 World Cup. Therefore, the teams that lose in the quarterfinals will have one last chance to qualify for the World Cup if they win both remaining playoff matches.
