According to the indictment, while hunting in the border area, Nguyen Van Cong met and befriended a man named Long (Lao nationality), and asked for his phone number to inquire about buying drugs.
In late April 2024, Cong called Long to inquire about purchasing 24 million VND worth of drugs. A few days later, Cong went to the meeting point previously specified by the seller, which was the Khe Kho area, near the Vietnam-Laos border.
Here, Cong handed over the money and received a package of drugs. Cong took the drugs home and hid them in various places, such as the kitchen and the charcoal stove.
Later, Cong used plastic bottles, glass tubes, and white plastic pipes to create drug paraphernalia. Nguyen Van Cong took a small amount of drugs and brought them to the Quoc Mau Temple in Vo Liet commune to use.
As Công was leaving the mansion after using drugs, he was arrested by law enforcement along with over 90 grams of narcotics as evidence.
During a search of Cong's residence, the police discovered an additional 30 grams of drugs. Therefore, the total amount of drugs for which Cong is criminally liable is over 121 grams.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crimes as charged in the indictment. The defendant stated that due to addiction, he bought methamphetamine for personal use and to sell for profit. Regarding the money used to buy the drugs, the defendant claimed it came from selling livestock that he and his wife raised.
The defendant presented his difficult circumstances, including three young children, to the court to consider mitigating circumstances and reduce his sentence.
Considering the defendant's actions constituted a violation of the law, the court sentenced Nguyen Van Cong to 20 years in prison for the crime of illegally trading narcotics.
