Giant chicken 35 million/pair: Rare item fever, players hunt for it
(Baonghean.vn) - A giant chicken named Brahma has white feathers that cover all the way to its toes, but its neck feathers are black. Chicken breeders from North to South are looking for this breed. However, many people still cannot afford to buy it, even though they are willing to spend 25-35 million VND to own a pair of these chickens.
In recent years, the Dong Tao chicken farming movement has become popular. This purebred Vietnamese chicken breed is classified as a giant chicken, with an average weight of 4-6 kg/chicken.However, for over a year now, instead of Dong Tao chickens, the rare chicken breeders have started switching to a giant chicken of American origin called Brahma.
This breed of chicken has a super large weight, reaching 6-8 kg/chicken when fully grown, some even weigh up to 18 kg. Their feathers are thick and long, covering from the head to the toes. That is why Vietnamese chicken breeders often call Brahma chickens giant chickens or unicorn chickens.
Mr. Giang Tuan Truong, owner of a chicken farm in Dong Tao (Khoai Chau, Hung Yen) said that he has raised Dong Tao chickens for many years. For nearly a year now, he has been fascinated by the beauty of the giant Brahma chicken breed and wants to buy one to raise on his farm along with Dong Tao chickens.
However, at that time, it was quite difficult to buy a pair of this type of rooster and hen because they were still rare, even though the price was up to 35 million VND/pair.

There are chickens that can reach weights of up to 18kg. |
At that time, chicken prices were sky-high and adult chickens were hard to buy, so he found a source to buy eggs and hatch them himself. As a result, he now owns a giant flock of up to 12 adult chickens in the process of breeding.
The giant Brahma chickens initially feel like sick chickens. Around 3-6 months old, they are usually very thin, although they still eat normally. From the 7th month, they begin to grow in body width. And from the 8th month, they start to reproduce regularly, with 20-30 eggs/clutch. A Brahma hen lays about 150-200 eggs a year.
According to Mr. Truong, Brahma chickens are currently sought after by many people on the market. However, the price depends on the feather color and age.
This type of chicken usually costs about 15 million VND/pair of male and female. |
For example, if adult chickens have white feathers and black striped necks, the current market price ranges from 25-35 million VND/pair, male or female. Other feather colors cost around 15-20 million VND/pair. As for baby chickens, customers line up to order even though they have just hatched from their eggs, the price is 500,000 VND/chicken.
However, if it is a giant white-feathered chicken breed, the price can be up to 25-35 million VND/pair because it is rare. |
“I only sell newly hatched chicks. Many people have come to buy the 12 adult chickens I’m raising in my garden, but I always refuse even though they offer a high price,” said Mr. Truong, adding that for chicken farmers, if they like chickens, they won’t sell them no matter how much they get offered, but will keep them for breeding.
Despite the high price, giant chickens are still sought after by many people. |
A newly hatched chicken can also be bought for 500,000 VND. |
Previously, Mr. Phuoc - the owner of a chicken farm in District 12 (HCMC), also said that a pair of adult Brahma chickens usually costs about 15 million VND, and 1-1.5 month old chicks cost an average of 1 million VND/chicken.
“This type of chicken is easy to raise, has a docile temperament, and a gentle and strong appearance, so it is favored by pet chicken breeders, who seek to buy it at all costs. Therefore, the price of chickens is often sky-high. Now the price has decreased somewhat, but it is still among the most expensive chickens in Vietnam,” he shared.
