A phenomenon of hens giving birth to chicks occurred in Welimada city, Uva province, Sri Lanka. The mother hen died after giving birth, but the chicks were normal-looking and perfectly healthy, BBC reported yesterday.
PR Yapa, head of the city's veterinary agency, examined the carcass of the mother hen. He concluded that the egg that produced the chick had developed normally, but it remained inside the hen's body for an additional 21 days—enough time for the egg to hatch into a chick. Afterward, the chick emerged from its mother's body.
The autopsy of the mother hen revealed that she died from multiple internal injuries.
