Previously, around August 2017, Thai and Ms. Thach Thi Thao Nguyen (born in 1989, residing in Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province) met through social networks and fell in love. In early 2018, Ms. Nguyen and Thai went to work on a farm for hire in Pa Pech hamlet, Tan Hung commune, Dong Phu district, Binh Phuoc province.
At around 3:00 p.m. on January 11, 2018, after drinking alcohol, Thai went to bed. At this time, Thai heard Ms. Nguyen talking to two other farmers and suspected that her lover had feelings for them.
After taking his girlfriend back to his place, Thai had the intention of having sex. However, due to the sound of motorbikes, the incident did not go as planned. At this time, Thai blamed Nguyen for drinking alcohol and being intimate with the other two people.
Because she was angry, Nguyen told Thai that if they were not compatible, they should break up. Thai was angry and had the idea of killing his lover and then committing suicide. Not stopping there, Thai picked up a piece of wood on the ground and hit Nguyen's head and body many times. When the piece of wood broke, Thai continued to pick up another piece of wood and hit her head and neck many times, causing the victim to die.
Thai dragged Nguyen's body into the ditch, covered his face with a towel, and pulled grass to cover the victim's body. Then, he returned to his place, got on his motorbike, drove to Chau Thanh market, Tra Vinh province, then abandoned the motorbike and ran on foot.
On the way, Thai bought a bottle of pesticide. At around 8am on January 12, he went to a motel, sat down and wrote a suicide note apologizing to his family, then drank the pesticide but threw it all up. After that, Thai went to an acquaintance's house and was taken to the police station in Cau Ngang district to confess. Thai was arrested by the prosecution and charged with "Murder".
At the trial, after reviewing the circumstances, the panel sentenced the defendant Thai to 18 years in prison, and ordered him to compensate for mental damage and child support for the victim, in the amount of 435 million VND.
