The Guardian (UK) reported on January 9 that investigators in the Iraq War Crimes Investigation Team (Ihat) established by the British Government have contacted nearly 300 former British soldiers who fought in Iraq in the process of clarifying allegations of murder, abuse and torture in this oil-rich country.

Ihat said he wrote to the veterans after warning them that some could face prosecution.

In some cases, letters were handed to former British servicemen, with the content stating that investigators could "ask some questions where appropriate," according to an Ihat spokesman.

A total of 280 former soldiers have been sent notices saying they were involved in a case that Ihat is investigating.

Regarding the Ihat investigation, the British Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying: "The vast majority of British military personnel deployed for military operations have acted professionally and in accordance with the law. The British Ministry of Defense takes all allegations of abuse or unlawful killing very seriously. That is why we want to investigate them to clarify the truth"./.
