Nearly 60,000 candidates change their wishes: Should rely on personal ability
Candidates should take advantage of the right to change their preferences according to this year's regulations. However, they should avoid making arbitrary changes, but should still rely on their personal abilities and strengths as well as learn about social and employment needs for the profession they plan to study.
According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training, as of July 16, nearly 60,000 candidates adjusted their admission application, mainly online.
Regarding the adjustment of candidates' wishes, Mr. Nguyen Khac Khiem, Vice Principal of Vietnam Maritime University, said that candidates are allowed to change their wishes after the exam results are out, which is an advantage of this year's exam. Therefore, candidates should take advantage of the right to change their wishes according to this year's regulations.
However, Mr. Khiem said that candidates should avoid arbitrary changes, but still rely on their own abilities and strengths as well as learn about social and employment needs for the profession they plan to study.
Based on the exam results + personal abilities and strengths in the desired profession + research on social needs for the desired profession + family and personal conditions: candidates should choose a number of universities that also offer training in the field they want to study, then research the standard scores in the past few years, especially 2016 for reference, then, in the registration wishes, rank from the school with the highest standard score for that field to the school with the lowest standard score.
Mr. Khiem noted that to avoid failure, candidates need to note that this year the average score is high, so the predicted benchmark score will be higher than previous years, so they must have reasonable backup wishes (low wishes) (For example: choose a low wish at a school with a benchmark score in 2016 3-4 points lower than this year's exam score to ensure safety...).
"Candidates should ask for advice from their parents and relatives, especially those working in the field they plan to study, those working at the school they plan to study, or students studying at the school they plan to study. Information in the press, especially online newspapers, is also a fast and useful information channel for candidates," Mr. Khiem shared.

Consider the Ministry's floor score for safety
Regarding the fact that many top schools set the admission threshold score equal to the Ministry of Education and Training's floor score of 15.5, does that make it difficult for middle and lower-ranking schools? Mr. Nguyen Khac Khiem, Vice Principal of Maritime University, said that the schools' decision on admission scores for the school or its majors is within their authority and does not violate regulations, regardless of whether the admission score is high or low.
According to Mr. Khiem, the admission method from 2016 to 2017 created a high virtual ratio and it is very difficult for each individual school to accurately determine the virtual ratio. In 2016, many top schools did not recruit enough students despite very high admission scores, leading to a need to ensure safety for 2017. Determining the floor score for schools is still just "guessing" because currently, schools do not have data on the national high school exam scores of candidates applying to the school.
The announcement of admission scores of new schools is mainly based on the number of registered candidates and the general national exam score distribution, so to avoid wrong predictions, schools choose admission scores equal to the common floor score for safety.
The admission scores of the top schools will greatly affect fewer candidates because this year, the new point of the regulation is to allow candidates to register unlimited wishes, those who do not meet the high wishes will automatically be considered for the low wishes, and the wishes can be from many schools.
Therefore, the floor score for each specific school is no longer as important to candidates as before, but candidates will choose to rank their wishes according to their ability to get the standard score from high to low, mainly based on the reference standard scores of previous years, without paying much attention to the floor score of each school.
However, Mr. Khiem said that the number of top schools is not much, while the majority are schools in the middle - average group. If the average schools clearly define the admission scores for each major, there will be good orientation for candidates during the time allowed to change their wishes. However, in reality, the middle schools tend to choose the Ministry's floor score to ensure safety.
Mr. Khiem proposed that if next year (2018) the Ministry of Education and Training still maintains the same examination and evaluation method as this year, he suggested that the Ministry of Education and Training could immediately provide the exam results of candidates for each school so that the schools can be more proactive and accurate in determining admission scores to the school or to each major of the school, thereby providing better orientation for candidates./.
