Nearly 9,000 liters of suspected aviation fuel mixed with regular gasoline: Fire and explosion hazard

If the seized gasoline is special aviation gasoline, when mixed with regular gasoline, it will cause a very high risk of fire to vehicles.

According to Dan Tri, on March 4, Market Management Team No. 9, Hung Yen Province Market Management Department, when checking a car with license plate 29C 391.61 parked at Ticket Control Station No. 1, National Highway 5A, discovered that the car was transporting 8,815 liters of liquid, suspected to be gasoline, without any accompanying invoices or documents.

Authorities assessed that the liquid on the vehicle was suspected to be special gasoline for aircraft that the subjects stole and then sold on the market. Because previously, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee 389 had received information about the act of connecting a pump to pump gasoline for aircraft at the warehouse area of 165 One Member Company Limited (under the Military Petroleum Corporation in Ban Yen Nhan town, My Hao, Hung Yen) to sell outside.

Determining this is a complicated case, involving many areas, the above goods could be high-grade gasoline, specialized for military aircraft used for military and defense purposes. Therefore, Minister of Finance Dinh Tien Dung (Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee 389) has issued a document requesting the authorities of Hung Yen to continue investigating and clarifying the case, avoiding missing criminals and clarifying the origin of the goods as well as the possibility of military units in the area colluding to sell them for illegal profits. In case of involvement of organizations or individuals in the military, the Hung Yen Steering Committee 389 will report to the National Steering Committee 389 for direction of investigation and handling.

A representative of the Office of the National Steering Committee 389 assessed on VNE that the pumping and transporting of this "illegal" liquid has indicators that are harmful to the environment such as lead and octane content that is too high. "If put into consumption, it is very dangerous for traffic participants, no different from the bomb sawing incident in Ha Dong," he compared.

This person also stated that it is necessary to find out the origin of the gasoline soon. "If it is military aviation gasoline, where did it come from, in which military warehouse, otherwise it will become a criminal network," he said.

In particular, if the suspicion that this is special gasoline for airplanes that the subjects stole and then sold on the market is true, this could be one of the causes of the situation where some vehicles on the road suddenly stalled, caught fire, exploded... causing danger and insecurity for people as the press has reported in recent times.

Increased risk of engine failure or car or motorbike fire

Speaking to VTC News, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Vinh Khanh, Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology: Aviation gasoline (mainly Jet A1) is a fuel made from kerosene (KO). The chemical composition of Jet A1 is mainly hydrocarbons, so it is much different from A92 or A95 gasoline, more like diesel.

If you use jet fuel for diesel engines (for example buses, trucks, container trucks...), it can run, because the properties of Jet A1 are relatively similar to those of diesel. However, Jet A1 cannot be used for gasoline engines (such as motorbikes, family cars...). Using jet fuel for motorbikes will definitely cause the engine to stall or be damaged due to detonation.

“In the case of mixing aviation gasoline with A92 or A95 gasoline, depending on how much is mixed, it can be used for gasoline engines, but the possibility of damaging the vehicle engine or causing a fire or explosion can still occur,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Vinh Khanh.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tran Duy, an employee in the Technical Department of Noi Bai International Airport, the type of gasoline used for airplanes is completely different from the gasoline used for other means of transport.

Aviation gasoline is also called Avgas (Aviation Gasoline) to distinguish it from the gasoline used daily for cars and motorbikes, which is Mogas (Motor gasoline). Aviation gasoline is a fuel with a high octane rating, used for airplanes or racing cars. Aviation gasoline has a lower volatility than regular gasoline for better use at high altitudes. The anti-knock index, heat of combustion, fluidity, and oxidation stability of these two types of gasoline are also different.

“Therefore, using aviation gasoline for vehicles such as cars and motorbikes will have major impacts, because the engine is “not compatible” with the fuel, potentially causing damage and even explosions during the operation of these vehicles,” Mr. Duy warned.

According to a petroleum expert, the type of gasoline used exclusively for jet engines is a special type of gasoline. When mixed without following any process or quality assurance, it is even more harmful to the engines of vehicles such as motorbikes, scooters, cars of all kinds...

“Most commonly, jet fuel is mixed with DO oil. Using this type of mixed gasoline not only causes damage to the machinery of the vehicle but can also cause unexpected fires and explosions while on the road,” said the expert./.
