According to expert Nguyen Quang Binh, coffee prices have been on an upward trend this week due to changes in trade policies between countries. The imposition of a 50% import tax on Arabica coffee from Brazil has prompted investors to increase purchases on trading floors, causing global coffee inventories to fall to a 19-month low.

The scarcity of supply has caused international coffee prices to continue to maintain an upward trend. In this context, Vietnam's Robusta coffee is benefiting from a significantly lower price than Arabica, helping to open up better growth space in the coming time.

In the domestic market, coffee prices in the Central Highlands provinces recorded a slight increase last week. On average, coffee prices increased by 500 to 700 VND/kg compared to the previous week. Specifically, in Dak Lak, coffee prices increased the most, reaching 114,500 VND/kg.

In Dak Nong, coffee prices are also at 114,500 VND/kg, an increase of 500 VND/kg. In Gia Lai, coffee prices increased to 114,000 VND/kg, while in Lam Dong, coffee prices reached 113,500 VND/kg. The continued increase in coffee prices helps farmers feel secure in production and businesses have favorable conditions in purchasing.

Coffee prices were hit hard last week by trade talks between the US and Brazil. At the same time, coffee inventories on international exchanges fell to their lowest levels in months, contributing to the slight fluctuations in coffee prices.

Traders said that grade 2 robusta coffee, with a 5% black and broken ratio, is being offered at a discount of about $50 a tonne to the January contract on LIFFE. This slight decline is seen as a temporary market reaction to fluctuations in supply and currency rates.

In Indonesia, Sumatra robusta coffee is now being offered at a $40/ton discount to the November and December contract, compared with a $10-$20/ton premium last week. Other traders said coffee prices continued to be quoted at a $30/ton discount to the January contract, widening the discount from the previous $20/ton.

The main reason for the decline in coffee prices in Indonesia is the prolonged rains in the West Lampung region, which could reduce the next crop’s output by 15% to 25%. The decline in output may force farmers to adjust their selling strategies, while international roasters are looking for alternative sources to ensure stable supply.
