Many businesses believe that the current decline in coffee prices is mainly due to the impact of US tariff policies, not due to an imbalance in supply and demand. Forecasts show that coffee prices may continue to fall in the near future.

Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA) said that Vietnam is currently the world's number one supplier of robusta coffee. However, the amount of coffee exported to the US market accounts for only about 5-6%. Of the total export turnover of about 400 million USD to the US, green coffee beans and roasted coffee are exempt from tax, while instant coffee is only taxed based on the coffee content, not the whole.

If the US actually imposes a 46% reciprocal tax on goods from Vietnam, Vietnamese coffee will lose its competitive advantage. Meanwhile, competitors such as Brazil and Colombia only face a 10% tax, creating a large gap in input costs.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Up 43 USD/ton, to 4839 USD/ton.

Delivery in July 2025: Up 13 USD/ton, to 4813 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Down 1.35 cents/lb, to 343.45 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Down 1.05 cents/lb, to 340.9 cents/lb.

Coffee prices continued to fall sharply in the latest trading session, with Arabica hitting a two-and-a-half month low and Robusta hitting a four-month low, according to Barchart. Risk-off sentiment in global financial markets, fueled by concerns about the trade war, has weighed on prices for most commodities, including coffee.

Another factor weighing on purchasing power is concerns that consumers will cut back on coffee consumption as prices rise due to the impact of new tariffs. In addition, the fall of the Brazilian real to a two-and-a-half month low against the dollar has prompted Brazilian exporters to boost sales, increasing supply to the international market.

Still, falling coffee inventories have provided some support for prices. ICE-monitored arabica stocks stood at 770,476 bags, the lowest in a month and a half. Robusta stocks stood at 4,304 shipments, the lowest in three weeks.

According to Reuters, coffee futures on the ICE exchange continued to fall due to concerns about the risk of a global recession. In that context, US President Donald Trump remained steadfast on trade tariffs, saying he would not change his stance until the US narrowed its trade deficit with China. He also affirmed: "Sometimes you need a bitter medicine to cure the disease."
