Impersonating a police officer to ask for shared accommodation in order to scam money.
(Baonghean.vn) - After being scammed out of money by his roommate who claimed to be a police officer, Mr. L.D.T reported the incident to the authorities.
At approximately 10:30 AM on May 11th, the police of Trung Do ward, Vinh City, arrested Thai Van Ly, born in 1997, residing in Hamlet 8, Phuc Trach commune, Huong Khe district (Ha Tinh province), for the following offense:impersonating police officersFraudulent appropriation of property.
Previously, on the afternoon of May 10, 2021, Mr. Luong Dinh T. went to the Trung Do Ward Police Station to report that Thai Van Ly had defrauded him of 2 million VND. Specifically, Thai Van Ly claimed to be a police officer and asked to share a rented room with Mr. T. Because Mr. T. saw that Ly had a full police uniform, shoes, socks, belt, lieutenant's rank insignia, a police badge, and handcuffs, Mr. T. trusted him completely.

On April 29, 2021, Mr. T. lost his motorbike and asked Ly to help him find it. Later, Thai Van Ly told Mr. T. that the Vinh City Police had found his motorbike and demanded 2 million VND from him to get it back. After paying the money and not receiving the motorbike, Mr. T. became suspicious and reported it to the police.
Upon receiving a tip-off about the crime, the Trung Do Ward Police investigated, verified the information, and proceeded to arrest Thai Van Ly.impersonationThe police are accused of fraud and misappropriation of property. During a search of Ly's residence in Block 6, Trung Do Ward, police seized numerous items including: a People's Police uniform, shoes and socks, a belt, lieutenant's rank insignia, a People's Police badge, one pair of handcuffs, and one fake People's Police identification card.

At the police station, Thai Van Ly confessed to impersonating a police officer and defrauding people of their money. According to his confession, Ly purchased police uniforms online and researched police procedures to gain the trust of his victims.
The Trung Do Ward Police have now handed over the suspect and evidence to the Vinh City Police for investigation and handling according to their jurisdiction.
