Onion prices "fall dramatically", Quynh Luu farmers lose crops

Thus, growing 2 sao of green onions, Mr. Tai's family only earned 7 million VND, after deducting all expenses, there was almost no profit. At this time last year, green onions cost 5,000 - 6,000 VND/kg, also on 2 sao of land growing green onions, his family earned 15 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Mien - Vice Chairman of Quynh Minh Commune People's Committee said: "The locality has 100 hectares of specialized land, of which 96 hectares are used for growing green onions. However, after a period of time when the price of green onions increased quite high, at times reaching 10,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, the price of this crop has now decreased sharply, causing farmers to lose their crops. Although the price is low, it can still be consumed, so the areas of onions that are ready for harvest are all harvested promptly by farmers, fortunately there is no phenomenon of stagnation in the fields".

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tue - Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee, the reason for the price drop of green onions at this time is due to "supply exceeding demand". Green onions love the sun, so this crop has a high yield, while the area of ​​green onions planted by people is larger than last year.

Quynh Luong commune has 215 hectares of specialized land, of which 130 hectares are currently growing green onions. Thanks to favorable weather this year, green onions have a high yield (1.5 tons/sao), and every day people harvest dozens of tons of onions to supply the market. Due to the high demand for green onions, not only for daily meals but also for drying factories, so even though the price is cheap, they can still be consumed.

Faced with the sharp drop in onion prices due to overproduction, Quynh Luong commune directed people to plant other vegetables in some areas after harvesting onions.

Quynh Luu district is the province's vegetable granary, with a total specialized land area of ​​nearly 700 hectares. According to Mr. Dau Duc Nam - Head of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, at this time, the area of ​​​​scallion in the communes of Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang... accounts for the majority of the current vegetable types. With the selling price at the field of 2,500 VND/kg, it is too low, farmers do not make a profit. In the next crop, communes should restructure the production of many types of vegetables at the same time, and should not focus on growing only one type of vegetable, leading to a situation where vegetable prices fall dramatically, causing farmers to lose their crops./.
