Scallion price hits record high of 30,000 VND/kg
(Baonghean.vn) - Due to the impact of storm No. 10, hundreds of hectares of green onions in Quynh Luu district were damaged, leading to a shortage of goods. Currently, the price of green onions is the highest ever at 30,000 VND/kg.
These days, Mr. Ho Dien Lich in Hamlet 7, Quynh Minh Commune is urgently going down to overcome the consequences of the storm and focusing on harvesting the remaining rows of green onions in the field. This autumn-winter crop, his family planted more than 2 sao of green onions, if not affected by storm No. 10, he would have earned 40 million VND in profit this crop. However, the storm caused heavy rain for many consecutive days, flooding the entire area of green onions that his family was preparing to harvest.
“After the storm, my family only salvaged some of the remaining area, but it was not significant. Currently, the price of green onions is very high, but there are no onions to sell, and the family lost tens of millions,” said Mr. Lich.

Storm No. 10 has damaged hundreds of hectares of vegetables, mainly green onions of people in Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong and Quynh Bang communes. Currently, the areas of green onions in the harvest period are very small, so the supply to the market has also decreased significantly. With limited resources, green onions are currently purchased by traders at very high prices from 28,000 VND - 30,000 VND/kg in the field.
Mr. Hoang Van Thai - an onion grower in Quynh Luong commune said that after storm No. 2 (from mid-July onwards), the price of onions increased to 18,000 VND/kg, 3 times higher than the price at the beginning of the year and after storm No. 10, the price of onions continued to increase to 28,000 VND - 30,000 VND/kg.

“Storm No. 10 caused heavy rain and flooded more than 1 sao of scallions of my family. Currently, the harvest is only about 600 kg of onions. Luckily, the price has increased so my family has managed to make some money to cover the cost,” said Mr. Thai.
According to the people, if 1 sao of green onions is well cared for, the yield will be 1.5 tons - 2 tons/sao; however, due to storms and rains that have damaged many of the people's vegetable areas, currently each sao of green onions only yields about 500 kg - 700 kg/sao. Because there is no source of goods to supply the market, the price is purchased by traders at a very high price but there is not enough quantity to supply the market.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tue - Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee said that this autumn-winter crop, the whole commune planted 210 hectares of vegetables, of which 70% of the area was green onions. Storm No. 10 combined with heavy rain flooded more than 100 hectares of local vegetables. Currently, the output of green onions harvested and supplied to the market is only 20 - 25 tons/day. Due to crop failure, the price of green onions purchased by traders is very high, households who take care of and grow onions in high land will earn a lot of profit at this time.
“In the context of rising onion prices, the locality is encouraging people to quickly harvest and sow a new onion crop to have products to supply the market. It is important to learn from the experience of storm No. 10, people need to restructure short-term crop varieties, plant in highlands, and bring in flood-resistant varieties for winter cultivation,” Mr. Tue added./.
