On a sunny summer day in mid-June, accompanied by officials from the Chau Tien commune's Fatherland Front, we visited the family of Mr. Vi Van Chuyen in Ban village, Chau Tien commune. While pouring water for his guests, he shared: Born in 1943, he had previously worked in the trade sector. In 1993, he retired to Hanh Tien village (now Ban village, Chau Tien commune). At that time, his family faced difficult circumstances, so Mr. Chuyen and his wife and children focused on economic development to alleviate poverty. To ensure food security for his family, he reclaimed an additional 20 hectares of rice paddies, bringing the total area of his family's paddy fields to 40 hectares. His family's average annual rice yield reached 50 to 55 quintals per hectare. Once food security was relatively stable, he continued to invest in developing his economy using a hillside farming model, planting hybrid acacia, pineapple, longan, cinnamon, and other fruit trees. In addition, he dug nearly 1000 square meters of land on the Hieu River to raise fish in cages. Each year he harvests 500 kg of fish, earning over 15 million VND. To increase his family's income, he also raises 10 buffaloes, 2 cows, and bought a threshing machine to provide rice threshing services to people in the commune and surrounding areas, yielding an average of 50 kg of rice per hectare. His family's total annual income is nearly 80 million VND.
Besides that, he also encouraged villagers to participate in economic development to alleviate poverty and create conditions to help disadvantaged families, such as organizing contributions of money, rice, and food for particularly needy households to build houses. For households needing to buy household items or livestock, he provided interest-free loans or allowed them to raise livestock on a low-interest basis. The family of Mr. Lo Van Huong in Hanh Tien village, Chau Tien commune, is one of four households whose dilapidated house was renovated thanks to the support from him and his relatives. In 2001, seeing Mr. Huong's extremely difficult circumstances and lack of means to build a house, he mobilized his relatives to each contribute 200,000 VND, 20 kg of rice, and 1 kg of meat or fish. For neighbors, he mobilized everyone to contribute labor and materials. After nearly a month of construction, Mr. Huong's house was completed with a total cost of nearly 15 million VND. To help Mr. Huong's family escape poverty, he provided Mr. Huong with a pair of breeding goats, which are now ready to reproduce.
After more than 10 years of retirement, during which time he has actively contributed to the family's economic development with his wife and children, he now owns a spacious house and has purchased expensive amenities such as a motorbike and television. He also has the means to invest in his children and grandchildren's education at universities and vocational schools. In addition, he participates in social work, fulfilling his responsibilities in every role and receiving numerous prestigious awards from the province, district, and commune. Notably, in 2009, he received a Certificate of Commendation from the Chairman of the District People's Committee for his achievements in economic development and national defense and security. He is one of the exemplary village elders of Quy Chau district who was elected to attend the 2014 Provincial Congress of Ethnic Minority Representatives.
At 70 years old, he remains exemplary in both his thinking and actions. In any circumstance, he is a solid support for his children and grandchildren. Because of this, his family is harmonious, and his grandchildren are diligent in their studies. In the village, he is always loved and respected, a worthy role model for his descendants and everyone else to emulate.
