Export rice price

In the export market, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of Vietnam's 5% broken rice remained stable at $397 per ton, unchanged from last week. This price is $6 per ton lower than Thailand's 5% broken rice, but $15 per ton higher than India's and $5 per ton higher than Pakistan's.

The biggest international attention is now on India. According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), India plans to export 24 million tonnes of rice in the 2025–2026 crop year, a whopping 40% of the global market share, enough to create a “new wave of exports” and turn the international trade landscape around.

The move comes after a long period of tightening exports from 2022, aimed at stabilizing domestic prices. Restrictions, including a ban on non-basmati white rice exports, a 20% duty on parboiled rice, a floor price on basmati rice and a complete halt on broken rice exports, were gradually lifted from September 2024 after the general election.

In particular, by March 2025, India will officially "unchain" 100% broken rice, a type of rice that was exported to 3.9 million tons in 2022, mainly to China and Africa.

Not only does it have a policy advantage, India also currently has grain reserves of up to 66.16 million tons, much higher than the domestic demand of 60 million tons for the public distribution system.

Positive weather forecasts from the India Meteorological Department also signal a favorable season, with 2024-25 Kharif paddy production estimated at 121 million tonnes, up nearly 7% from the previous year.

With its abundant production, competitive prices and increasingly open trade policies, India is creating great supply pressure that could weigh on other Asian countries, especially Vietnam and Thailand. USDA analysis shows that supply pressure from India could reduce demand for Vietnamese rice, which is priced higher than its competitors and heavily dependent on traditional markets.

In this fiercely competitive context, maintaining quality, stabilizing output and expanding markets have become vital factors for the Vietnamese rice industry. Vietnam needs to focus on promoting high-quality rice varieties, strengthening production and consumption links, and expanding to potential markets outside Asia such as Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The race for market share is becoming more intense than ever. With plans to bring 24 million tons of rice to the international market, India has not only firmly consolidated its position as a "giant" in the rice industry, but also posed a new and important challenge for Vietnam in its strategy to maintain its key role in the global rice value chain.
