Rice price today May 9, 2025: Domestic stable, world concerned about India-Pakistan tensions.

Rice prices in the domestic market on May 9 continued to be stable. Records in the Mekong Delta showed that supply was still limited and transactions were slow.

In localities such as An Giang, Lap Vo (Dong Thap), Sa Dec and An Cu (Tien Giang), the amount of goods arriving is low, warehouses are buying and selling sparingly, and the market is generally quiet.

In the world market, rice export prices have recorded mixed fluctuations between countries. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Vietnam's rice export prices remain stable: 100% broken rice at 323 USD/ton, 25% broken rice at 368 USD/ton and 5% broken rice at 398 USD/ton.

Meanwhile, the price of 5% broken rice from Thailand increased by 3 USD, to 410 USD/ton - the highest level currently among major rice exporting countries.

In contrast, the price of the same type of rice from Pakistan and India decreased slightly. Pakistan decreased by 1 USD to 388 USD/ton, while India decreased by 2 USD to 380 USD/ton.

Geopolitical tensions in South Asia are having a significant impact on the markets. On May 7, India launched airstrikes and missiles into Pakistan in response to an attack in the Kashmir region that killed many tourists. Pakistan counterattacked on the morning of May 8. The risk of escalating conflict between the two nuclear powers has deeply concerned the international community.

Experts warn that if the situation continues to worsen, food supply chains in Asia could be severely disrupted. India is currently the world's largest rice exporter, while Pakistan is the fourth largest.

Both are also key suppliers of many essential commodities for the Southeast Asian region, which is heavily dependent on agricultural imports.

In the post-pandemic context and the impact of climate change, any political or supply instability could push world food prices skyrocket, threatening global food security.
