Jackfruit price hits record high: 1 million VND/fruit
Thanks to the record high price of jackfruit, traders are competing to buy from gardens, and Thai jackfruit farmers in the West these days can earn up to 1 million VND/fruit.
Mr. Nguyen Van Long, a Thai early jackfruit grower in the jackfruit capital of Cai Lay (Tien Giang), said that jackfruit prices have increased sharply since the beginning of 2018. However, in recent days, Chinese traders have come to the garden to buy at a record high price of 50,000 VND/kg.
“Prices are high, selling a 20kg Thai jackfruit can bring in 1 million VND,” said Mr. Long. This year, jackfruit prices are high, so he only sold a small portion of the jackfruit in his garden and pocketed 50 million VND.
Mr. Tran Van Cung, a trader who specializes in buying Thai jackfruit to transport to the North for sale, lamented that not only has the price of jackfruit reached a record high, but Chinese traders are also competing to buy it, so for about a week now, he has not been able to buy any jackfruit from gardeners.

Similarly, many jackfruit growers in Hau Giang also said that the price of super early Thai jackfruit has increased since the beginning of the year and is currently at a record high. Traders come to the garden to buy grade I jackfruit at a price of 45,000-50,000 VND/kg, and grade 2 jackfruit is also over 40,000 VND/kg. This is the highest price ever.
For a 3-4 year old super early Thai jackfruit tree, it can yield about 30 tons/hectare. With the current high selling price, after deducting all costs and care, the gardener's income is about 500-800 million VND/hectare, many times higher than 2 years ago.
Discussing the issue of record high jackfruit prices, the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hau Giang province admitted that Thai jackfruit growers in Phung Hiep and Chau Thanh districts... are having high incomes because the price of this agricultural product is reaching a record.
According to this leader, in previous years, jackfruit prices fluctuated around 20,000-25,000 VND/kg. However, at present, the price of jackfruit has doubled.
According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, last March, the price of Thai jackfruit in some provinces in the West increased sharply, reaching a record level of 40,000-50,000 VND/kg, 2-3 times higher than the same period last year. The reason for the high price of jackfruit is that exports to the Chinese market have been quite favorable recently.
