Domestic pepper prices improved significantly in the third quarter, increasing from 12 to 15.6% compared to the previous quarter. At the same time, pepper exports reached 63,242 tons, worth 417.7 million USD, up 8.5% in volume and 17.1% in value compared to the same period last year.

According to the Customs Department, although demand from the US has decreased, the amount of pepper exported to China, India, the Netherlands and the Philippines has increased sharply, helping the total turnover maintain its growth momentum. The export market structure is shifting positively, expanding to new countries and reducing dependence on a few traditional markets.

In the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam exported 186,503 tons of pepper, down 7.1% in volume but reaching 1.27 billion USD, almost equal to the whole of 2024 and up 28% in value over the same period. High export prices have helped the pepper industry maintain growth despite falling output.

Domestic pepper prices increased sharply in the third quarter but decreased slightly by 2-3.3% in early October. VPSA forecasts that increasing global demand and rising international pepper prices will continue to support exports, helping the pepper industry reach its target of surpassing the 1.5 billion USD mark in 2025.

In August 2025, India imported 2,541 tonnes of pepper, down 28.6% from the previous month. Vietnam remained the largest supplier with 1,058 tonnes, followed by Brazil (811 tonnes), Sri Lanka (508 tonnes) and Indonesia (138 tonnes). Despite the short-term decline, India maintained steady imports from key markets, especially Vietnam.

As of the end of August, India's total pepper imports reached 27,682 tons, down 10.5% compared to 2024 but up 34.4% compared to 2023. Vietnam accounted for 34.5% of the market share, equivalent to 9,563 tons, up 7.1% over the same period. Meanwhile, imports from Sri Lanka decreased sharply, while Brazil and Indonesia increased due to the need to supplement supplies.

On the other hand, the US, Germany and India are still the three largest pepper consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for 24.7%, 8.1% and 6.1% of total export turnover. Notably, exports to Germany and India increased sharply, 43.4% and 64.3% respectively, thanks to the increased demand for spices and food processing. Vietnam mainly exports black pepper to India, accounting for more than 84% of the total value.

The outlook for pepper exports to India is favorable as the country is expected to see a 20% reduction in domestic production due to adverse weather conditions. The supply shortage is forcing Indian businesses to increase imports, opening up a great opportunity for Vietnam to expand its market share and consolidate its position as the world’s leading pepper exporter.
