Pepper prices today, March 19, 2025: Domestic prices increased sharply.
Today, March 19th, domestic pepper prices are at 159,000 - 161,000 VND/kg. Domestic pepper prices have increased sharply by 1000 to 2000 VND/kg compared to yesterday. Vietnamese pepper prices are currently at their highest level in the past 8 years.
Domestic pepper prices today
The highest pepper purchase price recorded in key pepper-growing regions (Dak Lak, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Dak Nong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc) was 161,000 VND/kg.
Specifically, in Dak Nong province, the price of pepper is 161,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.
In Gia Lai, the price of pepper is 159,500 VND/kg, an increase of 1,500 VND/kg compared to yesterday.
In Dak Lak, the price of pepper is 161,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.
In Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai provinces, the price of pepper today is 159,000 VND/kg, a sharp increase of 2,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.
In Ba Ria - Vung Tau, the price of pepper today is 159,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.
Thus, the lowest price for pepper in the domestic market today is 159,000 VND/kg.
Currently, farmers in Dong Nai province, especially in the Long Khanh area, are entering the pepper harvest season. This year's pepper prices are higher than in previous years, helping farmers earn better incomes. Global demand for pepper is projected to remain high, which could lead to further price increases in the near future.
However, despite favorable pepper prices, pepper farming remains unstable. Both the area and production of pepper have decreased sharply in recent years due to fluctuating prices, causing concern among farmers.
The 2024 dry season was harsh, with erratic weather causing crop failures in pepper cultivation. Many pepper-growing regions experienced a 20-40% decrease in yield compared to the previous year. Furthermore, many pepper gardens flowered and bore fruit twice, but the second harvest had a high percentage of empty berries. This forced farmers to accept only one harvest, significantly impacting production.
The decline in pepper production is also due to farmers converting some of their land to other crops. However, amidst low supply, demand in the global market remains strong, helping to maintain high prices for Vietnamese pepper.
Today's world pepper prices
On the world market, based on quotations from exporting companies and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) has updated the prices of various types of pepper traded on the international market on March 19th (local time) as follows:
Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices fell slightly compared to yesterday, reaching US$7,298/ton (down 0.32%). Similarly, Muntok white pepper prices also decreased slightly compared to yesterday, reaching US$10,250/ton (down 0.32%).
The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,900 per ton.
Malaysian ASTA black pepper prices remained unchanged from yesterday at US$9,800/tonne. Additionally, the price of ASTA white pepper from the same country also stayed the same as yesterday at US$12,300/tonne.
Prices for all types of Vietnamese pepper remained stable compared to yesterday. Specifically, the price of Vietnamese black pepper (500 gr/l) reached US$7,000/ton; and the price of black pepper (550 gr/l) reached US$7,200/ton.
Similarly, the price of Vietnamese white pepper remained unchanged compared to yesterday at $10,000 per ton.
Currently, Vietnam accounts for 40% of the total global pepper production and nearly 55% of its export value. In 2024, pepper exports reached US$1.32 billion, making a significant contribution to the country's agricultural economy.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quy Duong, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Vietnam has great advantages in soil and climate, helping pepper plants achieve an average yield of 26 quintals/hectare, double the global average.
Furthermore, the Vietnamese pepper industry is focusing on sustainable development, expanding cultivation areas according to international standards such as GAP, VietGAP, and GlobalGAP. It is projected that by 2030, 40% of the pepper growing area will meet international standards, improving product quality and export value.
Previously, Vietnam mainly exported pepper in raw form, but now large enterprises have begun to focus on deep processing. This is an important strategy to help increase export value and enhance competitiveness in the international market.
Currently, Vietnamese pepper prices are at their highest level in eight years, presenting many opportunities but also posing numerous challenges. As global supply declines, Vietnam continues to maintain its position as the world's leading pepper exporter.
To capitalize on this opportunity, the pepper industry needs to shift towards sustainable production, focusing on improving quality, promoting deep processing, and expanding international cooperation. With pepper prices trending sharply upward, both Vietnamese farmers and businesses can expect a bumper year for Vietnam's "black gold."
