In the context of decreasing global supply and increasing consumption demand, world pepper prices remain high. In particular, black pepper prices in major markets such as the US have increased sharply over the past 5 years, peaking in June 2024 at 8,693 USD/ton.
Global pepper output in 2024 is estimated at 533,000 tons, down about 10,000 tons compared to the previous year. In Vietnam, output decreased by 20,000 tons, to only 170,000 tons. However, it is expected that in 2025, Vietnam's pepper output may recover and increase to 200,000 tons.
While Vietnam expects output to recover, India expects pepper output to fall by 25-30% in 2025 due to adverse weather conditions, which could have a significant impact on global pepper supplies.
China, the US and the EU are major pepper consumption markets, expected to increase imports in 2025. China alone imported 9,677 tons of pepper in the first 11 months of 2024, up 15.1% in volume and 42.1% in value over the same period last year, reflecting strong consumption demand.

According to Thehindubusinessline, the Indian pepper industry has had a successful year in 2024 thanks to strong demand, high production and steady price increases. These factors have brought cheer to pepper growers despite increased imports. However, erratic weather conditions are threatening the projected pepper production in 2025.
According to the farming community, pepper output in 2024 will reach 100,000 tons, a significant increase compared to the previous year's 80,000 - 85,000 tons. Strong demand has helped maintain pepper prices at a good level, despite the high output.
The increase in pepper production is mainly due to expansion of new areas under cultivation in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and improved productivity in traditional pepper growing areas in Kerala. This has contributed significantly to the growth of the Indian pepper industry in 2024.
