In April, domestic pepper prices dropped sharply from 4,000 to 5,000 VND/kg due to the impact of the new US tariff policy. However, the current price is still about 57 to 59% higher than the same period last year, the increase ranges from 56,500 to 58,000 VND/kg.

At the International Pepper Day 2025 held in Jakarta, Mr. Natan Kambuno, representative of the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, presented the pepper industry development strategy.

The government is stepping up intensive farming, taking advantage of free trade agreements and promoting value-added products to increase competitiveness in the international market. However, the pepper industry is facing external risks as the US plans to impose new import tariffs on this item.

Ms. Firna Azura Ekaputri, Executive Director of IPC for the 2021–2025 term, expressed concern because the US does not produce pepper itself but still imports about 100,000 tons each year, equivalent to 25% of global trade.

She said that imposing taxes on products that do not directly compete with American farmers is unreasonable, and IPC has officially sent a document requesting the US Government to remove pepper from the list of taxed products.

The new IPC Director for the 2025–2028 term, Ms. Marina Novira Anggraini, called for coordination between the government, associations and farmers to overcome the difficult period and maintain the stability of the industry.

Indonesia, as the host country of the IPC Secretariat, is at the center of promoting cooperation among producing countries. IPC currently has 7 member countries accounting for 70% of global pepper production, and is a key organization in maintaining the balance of supply and demand in the world market.
