US President Donald Trump's announcement of a minimum 10% tax on all imported goods and a 46% corresponding tax on goods from Vietnam is causing concern for pepper exporters. This is Vietnam's key agricultural product, currently holding a very large market share in the US market.

According to Mr. Le Viet Anh, Chief of Office of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), Vietnam is currently the largest pepper supplier to the US, accounting for 77% of the total pepper imported by this country. Conversely, the US is also the largest export market for Vietnamese pepper.

In 2024, Vietnam exported more than 72,300 tons of pepper to the US, up 33.2% over the previous year. The turnover reached 409 million USD, accounting for 31% of the country's total pepper export turnover. With such a large trade relationship, any change in tax policy will have a strong impact on businesses.

Mr. Le Viet Anh said that what worries businesses is that many pepper export contracts to the US were signed in early 2025, with delivery times extending to August and September. When signing these orders, businesses did not anticipate that the US would increase taxes, so the selling price has not yet included the 10% import tax.

If the new tax is applied to the signed shipments, Vietnamese businesses are at risk of suffering heavy losses. In this situation, some businesses are considering renegotiating with their US partners to share the cost of the new tax, hoping that each side will bear a part.

It is not yet clear whether pepper is on the list of products subject to the 46% reciprocal tax. The Vietnamese pepper industry is waiting for detailed information to have a specific solution. Many businesses still hope that during the negotiation process between the two governments, pepper will only be subject to a 10% import tax like other products, without having to pay additional special reciprocal tax from the US.
