Gold price this afternoon 3/9 set a new record in the world market. The main reason is that investors are looking for a safe place to protect their capital from the fluctuations of the financial market.

As of 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Vietnam time, the world gold price has reached 3,535.2 USD/ounce, an increase of 49.79 USD/ounce compared to yesterday. This is the highest price in more than 14 years.

Gold prices continued to set new records on Wednesday, amid volatile markets and growing confidence from investors that the US Federal Reserve will soon cut interest rates this month. These factors have boosted demand for gold - a safe investment channel in times of uncertainty.

Specifically, spot gold prices increased slightly by 1.43%, after reaching a record of 3,546.99 USD/ounce in the session. For futures contracts, US gold futures for December delivery also increased by 0.3%, to 3,602.40 USD/ounce.

Adding to the market uncertainty is the Trump administration’s move to ask the Supreme Court for a quick ruling on tariffs that a US appeals court ruled illegal last week. The Supreme Court’s decision could create a lot of turmoil and significantly change the economic landscape if it goes against the administration, according to Tastylive’s Ilya Spivak.

He also stressed that the risk of the Fed being affected by political pressure is a serious problem, and in that context, gold is on a strong rally with the dominant buying power. Trump has repeatedly pressured the Fed to lower interest rates and even publicly considered firing Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Last month, he tried to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook, raising concerns about the Fed's ability to operate independently.

According to CME Group's FedWatch tool, the market is pricing in a 92% chance that the Fed will cut interest rates by 0.25% at the end of its two-day policy meeting on September 17. Gold, which does not pay interest, tends to appreciate in a low-interest-rate environment.

Notably, the world's largest gold ETF, SPDR Gold Trust, announced that its gold holdings increased by 1.32% to 990.56 tonnes, the highest level since August 2022.

Investors are now waiting for the US non-farm payrolls report, due on Friday, to get a better idea of ​​the size of the Fed's interest rate cut this month.

Besides gold prices, spot silver prices fell slightly by 0.1% to $40.84 an ounce, despite previously hitting its highest level since 2011. Platinum fell 0.6% to $1,395.03 an ounce and palladium also fell 0.4% to $1,129.58 an ounce.
