Oil prices today April 18, 2025: Oil prices rise to two-week high amid low liquidity ahead of Easter holiday

World crude oil prices continued to rise on April 18, 2025, reaching their highest level in two weeks. The main driver came from concerns about supply disruptions after the US imposed additional sanctions on Iran's oil exports. Trading was also somewhat quiet as the Easter holiday was approaching.

As recorded at 4:30 a.m. (Vietnam time), Brent oil price increased to 67.10 USD/barrel, equivalent to an increase of 1.25 USD. Meanwhile, WTI oil price also increased sharply, reaching 63.82 USD/barrel, increasing by 1.35 USD.

Analysts say the new sanctions from the Trump administration have increased pressure on Iran. These measures not only target Iranian businesses but also include some small refineries in China, often called “teapot factories”, which are frequent destinations for Iranian crude.

However, Livia Gallarati, an expert at Energy Aspects, said sanctions targeting only the refinery may not be strong enough to completely stop the flow of Iranian crude to China. She said that if the US extended sanctions to related ports and banks, the impact would be more serious.

At the same time, OPEC said it had received new production adjustment plans from Iraq, Kazakhstan and several other countries to cut production further, making up for previous months of over-quota. However, some experts still expressed doubts about the level of compliance with these commitments in practice.

In addition, a report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed that gasoline and distillate fuel inventories in the US fell last week, contributing to supporting oil prices.

However, many large organizations such as OPEC, IEA, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have all lowered their forecasts for global oil demand growth. The reason comes from the negative impact of tariff policies and global trade tensions initiated by the US, followed by reactions from other countries. This is putting the oil market at risk of unpredictable fluctuations in the coming time.

In this adjustment period, the authorities did not set aside nor use the Price Stabilization Fund for any of the above-mentioned items.

Since the beginning of the year, gasoline prices have been adjusted 16 times, including 7 sessions of decrease, 6 sessions of increase and 3 sessions of mixed levels. This fluctuation reflects the unstable situation of world oil prices, especially in the context of constantly changing tax policies and global supply.
