Upon receiving the news, the Binh Chanh District Police arrived promptly. When the police tried to persuade him, Tu put a knife to his neck, challenging them to commit suicide if the police came.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Duc Thang - Deputy Chief of Binh Chanh District Police was present at the scene to direct the handling of the incident. A moment later, Tu took his child and went into a coffee shop along Highway 1 to defend himself.
There, Tu hit himself on the head with a glass, then grabbed a knife and hugged his child tightly. For 2 hours, Tu stubbornly hugged his child tightly and said he wanted to go to the police station to explain his reasons. The police force arranged for a local militia to use a motorbike to take Tu to the Binh Chanh Commune Police Station, Binh Chanh District.
When arriving at the police station, Tu was stubborn, still holding the knife, refusing to let go of his child and asking to explain, demanding that the police commit not to arrest him. After more than 5 hours of the incident, the police took advantage of Tu's carelessness to take the knife, restrain him and rescue the child.
Initially, the authorities determined that Tu was high on drugs. According to the police, Tu was an orphan and grew up in an orphanage. He currently has no stable job and at the time of the incident, his wife’s whereabouts were unknown.
