Here are some ways to use plums as medicine:
Plum pulp has a sour and astringent taste and is neutral in nature. It has the effect of generating fluids, quenching thirst, and treating yin deficiency with internal heat. It is used to treat the following conditions:
Dry mouth and lips due to reduced saliva production: eat ripe fresh fruit or drink its juice.
For joint pain: consume about 20g daily. Eat the flesh of ripe plums, grind the flesh, and squeeze out the juice to drink.
Alcohol poisoning: drink fresh plum juice; for dried plums, boil them to make a decoction.
Loss of appetite, poor appetite: eat a few plums before meals (or eat plum jam).
Medicinal dish to moisten the lungs and dissolve phlegm: 250g of pitted ripe plums, 500g of lean pork, add seasonings, simmer over low heat until cooked, then eat.
For children with weak legs and delayed walking: feed them a few unripe ripe plums daily after meals, or stew them with chicken feet to eat with rice or porridge (remove the skin from the chicken feet, stew them, then remove the bones and keep the tendons until tender. Avoid choking hazards for children).
Plum kernel: bitter taste, neutral in nature, laxative, promotes blood circulation, diuretic, anti-inflammatory. Used to treat the following conditions:
For blood stasis, fluid retention, and bone pain: decoct 12g of plum kernel and drink the liquid.
Scorpion and centipede bites: Apply crushed plum seeds as a poultice.
For facial blemishes and dark spots: Grind peeled plum seeds into a fine powder and mix thoroughly with egg white. Apply to the blemishes and dark spots before bed. Wash off in the morning. Continue this treatment for a period of time.
It acts as a laxative, relieving bowel movements and treating gas stagnation in the intestines, and constipation.
- Five-Ingredient Pill: Plum kernel, almond, cypress seed, three grams each; pine seed, peach kernel, tangerine peel, 8 grams each, crushed and mixed with honey to form pills. Take 8 grams twice a day with warm water to treat dryness and constipation.
Note:
- Avoid eating unripe plums that are too astringent. To make dried plums, they must be harvested when ripe. For fresh plums, choose ripe ones that are sweet and slightly sour. Avoid drinking too much water after eating plums to prevent loose stools. People with excess acidity should limit their consumption. Eating too many plums is harmful to teeth and stomach, and can cause phlegm. Do not eat them with honey or sparrow meat. Pregnant women should not consume plum pits.
- Distinguish it from wild plums, also known as forest apples or cat's claws, which are shrubs with poisonous fruit. Ancient texts warn that if a plum tastes bitter and doesn't sink (or floats) when dropped into water, it is poisonous. Do not eat this type of plum.
