The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature went to a French writer.

Reuters news agency reported that on October 9, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (RSAS) announced that French writer Patrick Modiano had become the winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The prize is worth 8 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).

The RSAS said historical novelist Modiano won the prize "for his memoir, in which he evoked the most unconscious human destinies and portrayed the life of the French people under Nazi occupation during World War II from 1940 to 1944."

The Nobel Prize in Literature is the fourth prize awarded in this year's Nobel Prize season.
